More and more, I see couples looking for ways to maximize their time with their wedding guests. They don’t want to miss the cocktail hour; they want to mingle freely, and dance and party into the night surrounded by the people they love most.
So, how do you maximize your time with your guests while still accomplishing everything you want on your wedding day? It all comes down to careful planning, clear priorities, and thoughtful collaboration with your vendors! Here are my top tips to help you create a day filled with connection and joy!
Choose a Venue That Supports Your Vision
Your venue plays a massive role in shaping your wedding day timeline! When you’re searching for the perfect spot for your special day, ask yourself these questions:
- How long can I be at the venue? Some venues have strict time limits, only allowing access a few hours before the ceremony. If that’s the case, you may find yourself spending most of the day in an offsite location, which can lead to a more segmented timeline.
- Does the venue offer flexibility for early arrivals? Venues that allow you to arrive early in the morning provide you with more opportunities to knock out formalities like family photos before your wedding guests arrive.
- Are there multiple spaces available onsite? A venue with separate areas for getting ready, the ceremony, and the reception can reduce travel time and keep everyone together!
Choosing a venue that aligns with your vision and your goals can set the tone for a relaxed and guest-focused wedding day! With more time onsite, you’ll have the freedom to enjoy your morning, complete pre-ceremony photos, and spend more meaningful, quality time with your loved ones.
Create a Timeline That Prioritizes Guest Interaction
Every wedding timeline is unique (as it should be!), and yours should reflect what’s most important to you and your partner! If maximizing time with your guests is your top priority, here are some tips to build a killer timeline:
Get Photos Done Before the Ceremony
If you want to be fully present during cocktail hour, plan to complete as many photos as possible earlier in the day. This can include family photos, wedding party photos, and your stunning couples portraits!
Depending on the time of year, you may also have the option to sneak away during the reception for golden hour couples portraits instead of doing them pre-ceremony! This flexibility allows you to mingle more with guests earlier in the day!
Consider a First Look
A first look is a private moment between you and your spouse before the ceremony. Not only does it create an intimate and emotional experience, but it also allows you to take some of your portraits early, freeing up more time to enjoy the reception with your guests! Personally, I looove first look photos!
Streamline Events and Traditions
Think about which traditions and events are most important to you. If your main focus is spending more time with your wedding guests, then maybe things like the bouquet toss or speeches don’t have to include the day of! You can shift these moments to other parts of your wedding timeline, like the rehearsal dinner, or skip them altogether to free up more time to dance, laugh, and celebrate with your guests.
Reconsider Your Morning Routine
Your wedding morning sets the tone for the entire day. If you want to prioritize time with loved ones, consider how you’d like to spend those first few hours of your special day. While shots of matching pajamas and makeup touch-ups are fun, they’re not a must-have for every couple! Instead, it can be filled with precious moments of you soaking up extra time with your closest friends, family, and soon-to-be spouse. This gives you extra time to soak up the excitement with your favorite people and those special moments before all the formalities begin!
You Call the Shots!
The best part about it being your wedding day is that you get to call the shots. You get to decide what your priorities are, what you want to spend time doing, and what moments are most important for you to have captured in your final wedding gallery!
So have the first look with your spouse, get your portraits done before the ceremony, fully enjoy cocktail hour with all your friends, skip the cake cutting, bouquet toss, and speeches during the reception—or whatever else you see fit to meet your end goal.
